Kyoto Beyond the Temples: Discovering the City Differently
Temples, gardens, traditional alleyways and neighborhoods with centuries of history. Kyoto is a city best enjoyed through both its iconic sights and its smallest details.

Kyoto features on almost every Japan itinerary thanks to its temples, shrines and gardens. But reducing the city to its major monuments means missing a small part of everything it has to offer.
Walking through Kyoto reveals a unique blend of tradition and everyday life. Just a few minutes from a modern avenue, you may come across a small street lined with wooden houses, a hidden shrine or a quiet garden.
Gion: Much More Than a Postcard
Gion is one of Kyoto’s best-known neighborhoods and one of the places where the city’s traditional architecture is most visible.
Its narrow streets, wooden houses and small businesses create an atmosphere very different from that of other major Japanese cities.
Take your time exploring it, and remember that it remains a neighborhood where many people live and work. Respecting private areas and avoiding intrusive behavior is part of being a responsible visitor.
Nishiki Market
Nishiki Market is a great way to get closer to the local food culture.
Along its streets, you’ll find small shops specializing in traditional products, sweets, pickles, fish, spices and a wide range of Japanese cooking ingredients.
There’s no need to turn your visit into a checklist of things to try. Part of the experience is simply observing the products, discovering new flavors and gaining a better understanding of Kyoto’s food culture.
Fushimi Inari Beyond the Entrance
Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine is famous for its thousands of red torii gates.
Most visitors gather along the first sections of the route, but continuing toward the higher areas reveals much quieter surroundings.
If you have time, it’s worth leaving the busiest areas behind and walking part of the trail as it climbs the mountain.
Arashiyama and Its Surroundings
The Arashiyama bamboo grove is one of Kyoto’s most photographed places.
However, the area has much more to offer.
You’ll find temples, gardens, riverside paths and small streets from which to explore the surroundings at a more relaxed pace.
A good option is to arrive early and spend several hours exploring the district rather than limiting your visit to the famous bamboo grove.
Five Ways to Discover a Different Kyoto
- Walk through residential neighborhoods away from the main attractions.
- Visit some lesser-known temples.
- Explore traditional markets and shops.
- Make time for gardens, not just buildings.
- Leave some space in your itinerary unplanned.
Travel Is Also About Observing
Kyoto is especially rewarding when you slow down.
Not everything has to become a photograph or a pin marked as completed on a map.
Sometimes, a small street, the sound of a bell, an empty garden or a family-run business can help you understand a destination better than any of its most famous attractions.
At Journety, we want every journey to help you discover not only what a place has to offer, but also why it is worth getting to know.
Because understanding a destination is a different way of remembering it.
